🍂 Fall into Good Habits: How Small Changes Prevent Big Risks

As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, autumn reminds us that seasons shift and so do our habits. At home, we start pulling out warmer clothes, preparing our yards for winter, and adjusting to shorter daylight hours. But in the workplace, those same seasonal changes can quietly introduce new risks if we’re not paying attention. Slippery leaves on walkways. Dimmer lighting during early morning shifts. Colder mornings that impact equipment and vehicles. These are small shifts, but they carry big consequences if complacency creeps in.

Why Habits Matter in Safety
The truth is most workplace injuries don’t happen because employees don’t know what’s safe. They happen because habits break down. Safety glasses left on the bench. A forklift checklist skipped “just this once.” A shortcut taken because “we’ve done it this way a hundred times.” Just like autumn leaves piling up in the corner, little oversights can build until they become hazards. Small habits, repeated daily, are what keep those hazards from taking root.

Building Better Habits This Season
Here are a few small but powerful steps teams can take right now:
• Reinforce the Basics: Remind teams that PPE and safe procedures are just as critical when things feel “routine.”
• Adapt to the Season: Address autumn-specific risks; wet leaves, reduced visibility, colder temps. Review emergency preparedness.
• Encourage Daily Check-ins: A 5-minute pre-shift discussion can reset focus and keep habits strong.
• Lead by Example: Supervisors and leaders should model the safe habits they expect, every single day.

Preventing Complacency
Habits are the antidote to complacency. When we intentionally “fall into” good habits, we create a culture where doing the safe thing isn’t an exception, it’s the expectation. And when that culture is strong, risks shrink, productivity grows, and employees go home safe.
