On January 15, 2025, OSHA’s final rule on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in construction took effect—requiring employers to ensure that PPE properly fits each employee. While this update falls under Subpart E of the construction standards, it has clear implications beyond the construction site.
At Coia Safety & Consultative Services, LLC, we’ve spent countless hours on job sites across industries—from logistics and manufacturing to crane and construction. One pattern is alarmingly consistent: PPE is often worn, but not always effective. Why? Because fit is frequently overlooked.
👓 We see safety glasses designed for impact hazards being worn in dusty environments, offering minimal protection.
🦻 We see ear plugs distributed in a single size, causing discomfort and leading employees to “make them work” or not wear them at all.
🦺 We see safety vests so large they introduce caught-by hazards—ironically creating a new risk while trying to mitigate another.
The intent of the new OSHA rule is simple: PPE must protect. That means it must be selected, sized, and worn appropriately—not just issued from a shelf. While the construction rule focuses on gender-appropriate sizing, the principle applies universally: PPE must match both the hazard and the human. From a compliance standpoint, employers should review how PPE is selected and assigned.
– Do you stock a variety of sizes?
– Do you evaluate worker feedback on comfort and fit?
– Are you conducting regular assessments of whether PPE aligns with actual site conditions?
A “one-size-fits-all” model not only fails from a safety perspective—it exposes employers to increased liability. OSHA’s language is clear: failure to ensure proper fit may now result in citations.
👣 So what should you do?
Start with a walk-through of your facility. Observe how PPE is actually being worn. Look for makeshift adjustments, visible discomfort, or gear that clearly doesn’t suit the wearer or task. These observations will guide your next steps—whether that’s updating your purchasing strategy, revising your PPE policy, or launching a focused training effort.
📞 If you’re unsure where to begin, Coia Safety & Consultative Services, LLC can help. We provide PPE assessments, policy development, and training programs tailored to your industry. We’ll ensure your equipment and your people are fully protected.
