Every second counts when a heart emergency strikes. Imagine a coworker suddenly clutching their chest, struggling to breathe. Would your team know what to do?

The Workplace Reality

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and cardiac events don’t just happen at home—they happen at work, too. According to OSHA, workplaces must have trained personnel available to provide first aid, including CPR, in the absence of a medical facility nearby (29 CFR 1910.151).

Yet, over half of U.S. workers don’t have access to CPR or first aid training at work. That’s a risk businesses can’t afford to take!

Heart Attack Warning Signs 🚨

A heart attack isn’t always a dramatic collapse like in the movies. Warning signs may include:
✅ Chest pain or discomfort (pressure, squeezing, or fullness)
✅ Shortness of breath
✅ Pain in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
✅ Cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness

Women may also experience unusual fatigue, dizziness, or flu-like symptoms. These signs can appear hours or even days before a heart attack, so don’t ignore them!

What to Do in a Workplace Emergency 🏥

1️⃣ Call 911 immediately—time is critical!
2️⃣ Locate a trained CPR provider in your workplace.
3️⃣ Use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) if available. AEDs are lifesaving and increase survival rates by up to 70% when used promptly.
4️⃣ Stay with the person and keep them as calm and comfortable as possible until help arrives.

Is Your Workplace Ready?

American Heart Month is the perfect time to evaluate your company’s emergency preparedness. Does your workplace have:
✔️ A well-stocked first aid kit?
✔️ Employees trained in CPR & first aid?
✔️ An AED on-site?

If not, it’s time to take action! Workplace safety isn’t just about hard hats and high-visibility vests—it’s about protecting lives.
