After being away for just 5 days, I caught myself feeling that creeping anxiety we all know too well, “What’s waiting for me when I get back?” The emails. The tasks. The mental load. It hit me: While many companies proudly offer paid time off, how many are truly supporting employees in taking that time without guilt, stress, or a hidden cost?
🔎 According to the American Psychological Association, 77% of workers report experiencing work-related stress, and more than one-third say it affects their physical health. Stress impacts decision-making, increases the risk of injury, and quietly chips away at morale and productivity. In high-risk environments, stress can be as dangerous as any physical hazard.
🧠 A dedicated safety culture doesn’t stop at hard hats and hazard assessments, it must embrace emotional and mental health too. When we care for our people holistically, we create safer, stronger workplaces.
Here are 3 action steps companies can take to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety in the workplace:
1. ✅ Normalize time off: Build systems that allow employees to step away without being buried upon return. That includes cross-training and adequate coverage plans.
2. 🧰 Integrate mental wellness into safety programs: Include stress management, burnout prevention, and resources like EAPs in toolbox talks, trainings, and onboarding.
3. 🗣️ Foster psychological safety: Encourage open conversations about mental health. Make it safe for employees to speak up before stress becomes a safety hazard.
💡 Bottom line: Your people are your greatest asset. If your safety culture only protects their hands and backs, but not their hearts and minds, it’s incomplete. I had a wonderful time unplugging with my family, and I came back recharged, but it was a choice I had to make to not let the anxiety win.
Let’s create workplaces where recovery, rest, and health are not luxuries; but expected, encouraged, and supported.
